Bedroom refresh for DIY beginners

Your bedroom is a place to relax and unwind after a busy day, some would say it’s the most important room in the house. The bedroom has many roles but its main purpose is a place to get some shut eye ready for the next day. So if you’re thinking of investing some of your time in this room and dusting off your DIY overalls here’s a few tips to help you get started.

Planning

This is the fun bit, finding some inspiration to help you decide how you want your room to look. Pinterest is a great resource for this, you can set up a board, search for bedroom ideas and anything you like the look of pin it to your board. Once you’ve brainstormed you can start narrowing down your options and come up with a mood board to help you pick colours, furnishing, window dressings etc.

Preparation

This really is the key to any DIY success story. The best place to start is clear the room, get as much furniture out as possible and cover everything else in dust sheets. If you have removed pictures from the walls and won’t be putting them back up fill the holes and sand. If your skirting, window sills and door frames need a bit of attention, get those rubbed down now before you start on the painting.

Trip to the DIY store

With room prep done you’re ready to paint or wallpaper your walls. There is a wealth of knowledge at your local DIY store so make the trip and ask for help. By explaining your room set up and what you are trying to achieve you will get the best product for the job. For example, if you know your walls aren’t the smoothest and your budget doesn’t stretch to re-plastering then a textured or patterned wallpaper could be the solution.

Get decorating and have fun!
